Letter to Sen Schumer

Here is a letter I wrote to Senator Schumer.

Dear Senator Schumer,

Isn't it unfair to treat one class of Master's level mental health providers so differently than another class of equally qualified counselors? How unfair is it for a college student to go to graduate school, earn a Master's level degree so they can help people suffering with mental illness and then find out that it is almost impossible to find a job because Medicare will not reimburse them. This is not only an issue for these counselors but also for Seniors in rural areas who do not have enough providers.

Help stop the discrimination against mental health disease and help promote fairness in the Senate's Health Care bill by adding an amendment like S671.

Thank you for listening.

3000 hour experience problem

Colleagues,

I have been informed of a particularly frustrating situation involving one of my fellow post-graduates and their 3,000 post masters hours. While the Office of the Professions, OOP, clearly states that at least half of the 3,000 hours must be direct contact it implies that half can be indirect, going on to clarify what these non-contact hours entail. My friend was recently told by their supervisor they would not sign off on the hours until there were 3,000 direct. Contact with the OOP was made and communication was sent to the supervisor clarifying the acceptance of half direct/half indirect. The supervisor is still stating they will not sign off stating it is the law leaving our fellow colleague questioning the ability, even with a one year extension, to be able to submit the needed experience hours before the expiration of the permit. I would like to hear any suggestions I might pass along and would be especially interested in what the NYMHCA moderators have in the way of guidance. Thank you all in advance.

Gratefully,

Josh

In the Senate's Finance Committee's Health Care bill, Senator Lincoln was suppose to have offered an amendment (D3)that would give mental health counselors medicare coverage. Does anyone know the status of that? Did she offer an amendment and was it included in the Senate bill???

Why did NYS choose the LMHC designation over the LPC? Nationally, which designation is more common? Thanks.

Scope of practice

Our scope of practice does not include diagnosis. I find this weird, because the NCMHCE is based on our ability to diagnose properly. I thought I had read some where that this was being addressed but I cannot remember where or when. Can anyone help me? This is going to be a sticking point when trying to compete with LCSW's!
